plutôt
Plutôt means 'rather' or 'quite': il est plutôt sympa — he's rather nice. It softens statements, adds nuance, and expresses preference ('je préfère plutôt le thé'). After an imperative it means 'instead': 'essaie plutôt ceci' — try this instead. A small word that makes French sound measured and native.
