pote
Un pote is a buddy, mate or pal — the standard colloquial word for friend. Old slang revived by the 1980s anti-racism slogan 'Touche pas à mon pote' ('hands off my buddy'), it's now completely mainstream. 'Mon meilleur pote' is my best mate; copain and pote live side by side in casual French.
