ainsi
Ainsi means 'in this way', 'like that' or 'thus'. It's on the formal side — you'll read it more than you'll say it — but it appears in everyday phrases too: 'ainsi va la vie' (so goes life), 'et ainsi de suite' (and so on). Recognising ainsi instantly makes written French easier.
